A renewed partnership with the government of Gabon.

In 2016, Sea Shepherd partnered with the government of Gabon to stop illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing in their coastal waters. São Tomé and Principe soon joined the campaign, resulting in the arrest of five ships operating illegally in the Gulf of Guinea. In June 2017, Sea Shepherd has returned to continue the campaign protecting their coastal waters.

Our return to Gabon to help combat illegal fishing in Africa’s largest marine protected area

On July 5, 2017 -- almost one month after Gabon’s President Ali Bongo Ondimba declared the creation of nine new national marine parks and 11 new aquatic reserves at the United Nations Ocean Conference in New York -- Sea Shepherd has been invited back to help the government combat illegal fishing in what is now Africa’s largest network of marine protected areas.
